I had so much fun at my first Crafty Fox market on Sunday: painting Peckham pink with the help of over 70 young sketchmates who came to enter my competition!
- Their brief = to design a pink-themed cover for the Sketchtember issue of Sketch Appeal magazine
- Their response = incredible!
From flowers and cupcakes - to pink trees and pooing pigs: it was amazing (and hilarious!) to see what people came up with given the same brief and set of materials. It just goes to show how unique our imaginations and interpretations of the world are - and how much fun it is to express them through art!
It was a tough call, but we've finally decided on a winner.
And the winner is: FIENNA!
We really loved the composition and captivating headlines on Fienna's cover: as well as the cutest pigs ever!
Here are some more of the amazing PINK-TURES:
From abstracts to portraits: who'd have thought you could get so much variety from the same set of pens! (Or that there could ever be something as fabulous as a a pink and purple rainbow!)
Step aside Mr Messy: there's a new boy in Peckham town!
The "Southwark Sweeties"
I loved chatting to so many enthusiastic young artists and watching them draw away in their element. It was great to chat to all their parents too: most of whom preferred to observe rather than participate in all the creative chaos! (Besides which, it was hard to get a seat at my 'sketchstop': such was the lure of all the pink things and free sweets!)
This lovely mother-daughter pair - the self-proclaimed "Southwark Sweeties" - managed to squeeze a spot and sketch together though:
To The Dad Who "Can't Draw"
One of the Dads I met said something that stuck with me afterwards:
"I can't draw but she loves it".
I didn't like to challenge him at the time but now I really wish I had.
I wish I'd said:
"We can all draw! And even if we think we can't: we can all love it - just like your daughter does! Besides, what do you mean you can't draw anyway?!"
And then our conversation might have continued:
Him: "It just never looks right"
Me: "According to who?"
Him: "Art teachers at school... compared to other people and proper artists"
Me: "Well based on that theory then I can't draw either! My work is never in proportion or perspective and I'm terrible at drawing men and hands. But like your daughter, I too love drawing - so I just do it: and therefore so can you!"
Him: "Mmmm, good point well made! Go on then: pass me a pen and I'll have a go!"
And then he might have sat beside his daughter to draw, and felt a tiny bit proud of himself at the end: having proved to himself that he can and he did draw!
Well that didn't happen: but if you're reading this, lovely man-whose-name-I-didn't-catch: it still can! Next time your daughter is drawing at home: JOIN IN!
You could even download the template and design another magazine cover together... and the same goes to all those who couldn't make it along to Crafty Fox!
